New statistics released by the government have revealed that funding for Sure Start centres, and other spending on children under five, has fallen by £100 million in the past year.
The figures show that in 2016-2017 the government spent a total of £774,349 on Sure Start and other spend on children under five. In 2017-2018, this dropped to £664,780.
“Slashed funding”
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s shadow education secretary, commented: “Year after year, the Tories have slashed funding for vital services that support some of the most disadvantaged children and families in our country.
“The chronic underfunding of these vital services by the Tories is leading to centres being lost across the country and the most vulnerable are paying the price.
“Labour will invest an additional £500 million in Sure Start to ensure that every family can access the support they need.”
