Children making a display at nursery

First Steps St Matthews Pre-school is an Early Years Alliance childcare service in Leicester. The pre-school is run by a well-qualified, kind and caring team who make the most of indoor and outdoor learning environments in order to support positive early years learning.

The pre-school has a strong reputation for having a friendly and secure approach to early years learning.

Professionals are trained to support all key areas of the EYFS, helping new skills and interests to develop, while maintaining a secure environment and supporting good nutrition.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) with a focus on learning through play and actively encourage parents to become involved in the life of the nursery.

The setting has regular stay and play sessions for our families. The focus of these sessions is to share information about the pre-school and to encourage parents to give feedback and offer their opinions.

First Steps pre-school is made up of many ethnicities and has a high intake of children with special educational needs and disabilities, and we are working together with other professionals in the setting.

We have a high number of children who speak English as an additional language and we are fortunate to have bilingual staff to support these families and children.

First Steps St Matthews is Rated 'Good' in March 2016.

The setting offers 72 Ofsted registered places for children aged between two- and four-years-old.

About us

The Alliance provides flexible, affordable and quality childcare across England. We are one of the largest providers of childcare in England with over 50 years of experience delivering childcare and practical, professional support to early years' practitioners.

First Steps St Matthews Pre-school offers a stimulating approach to early years development and learning for very young children.

Our pre-school plans its activities in accordance with the EYFS with a strong focus on exploratory, imaginative play and healthy eating. Our planning is a continuous programme to ensure that all seven areas of learning and development are covered every week.

We work in partnership with parents and carers adhering to the EYFS and providing a foundation of learning for the children, to prepare them for school.

Every child in our care is supported by a key person who understands their individual needs and offers special care and support to them.

Rigorous health & safety and safeguarding policies and procedures are in place to ensure that every child is protected and feels safe and happy with us.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt!

In our setting we do a variety of different activities based around each child’s interests to support the childrens' learning and development.

We recently focused on the story of We're Going on a Bear Hunt and the children produced a superb display board with all the key words from the story book.

The display board covered different areas of learning and encouraged the children to learn more from their work, by using it every day.

Our Team

Reading stories with my key personOur well qualified, committed and experienced team works hard to create a caring and learning environment in the pre-school. We know that every child develops differently and at different times. Every child has a key person who understands their individual needs and interests. This helps us ensure every child feels involved, stimulated and happy in our care.

We follow rigorous staff recruitment and supervision procedures to ensure anyone joining our team undertakes relevant security checks including Disclosure and Barring Service disclosure, references and qualification checks.

Parents are reassured knowing that child protection and safeguarding underpins every aspect of our practice.

Your child's 'key person'

Every child who joins the pre-school receives support from an experienced member of the team. They are responsible for your child’s individual needs and are known as the ‘key person’. The key person is your main point of contact, however all pre-school staff are happy to feedback on your child’s developmental progress on a daily basis or discuss any concerns with you. They will also keep records of your child’s progress and achievement, which are always available for you to see and contribute towards.

Your child’s key person will make time to find out from you about your child’s interests, likes, dislikes and special requirements. Please share any important or useful information when you register your child and throughout their time with us. This helps us to give your child the most appropriate care and learning. You can access and contribute to your child's progress in their records.
