Deep dive into the early years inspection judgements
In this series of Alliance Spotlights, we take a closer look at the Early Years Inspection Handbook focusing on each of the final judgements that Ofsted will make to contribute towards an overall grade. We will discuss the aspects that are considered, using the grade descriptors for 'good' as a starting point.
There will be opportunities to explore each grade descriptor in more detail to reach a shared understanding of what it entails and to share best practice amongst participants. Each session will also include extracts from recent (anonymised) inspection reports as we consider some of the strengths and weaknesses that Ofsted identify.
- Personal development
The ways in which educators support children’s character development is found in the care that is given and the sense of emotional security that is created. When provision is effective children are prepared to take appropriate risks and challenges as they play and learn.
In this session we will discuss the elements of personal development that are found in Ofsted’s grade descriptors.
- Leadership and management
Effective leadership and management is the key to success. When considering the grade descriptors for this area, inspectors will explore how shared values, policies and inclusive practice contribute to the quality of care and education that is offered. Furthermore, a culture of safeguarding that reduces the risk of harm to children and ensures they are protected at all times, must be clearly evident.
Ofsted’s grade descriptors refer to leaders having focus, integrity and a clear vision for their provision, in this session we will explore how these ideals can be realised to secure the best possible outcomes
Exploring the characteristics of effective learning
During this session we will be exploring how the characteristics of effective learning underpin all areas of learning.
We will consider how these characteristics support children's self-regulation and enable children to become strong lifelong learners.
These sessions will give you a basic awareness of Makaton and are suitable for both parents and early years practitioners.
We'll provide an introduction to Makaton and look at how it can be used. We'll cover basic signs, as well as singing with signing - which will include some seasonal favourites! With the exception of the song signing, the signs taught will be the same for all sessions.
